Going for a walk to try to get in a little bit of exercise is good and all, but it isn’t terribly effective if you don’t really have a ton of room to actually walk around in. This is particularly true in the city when your space can potentially be limited to your room or your apartment. Having a lack of space might make it a little more difficult to find a way to walk effectively, but that doesn’t mean that it’s impossible to reach your walking exercise goals!
The most important thing you can be doing is finding a way to maximize the space you have available. You should start by taking a look at all of your available options for walking routes, the first of which should be whether or not it’s safe and viable to go walking around where you live. If you live rurally this usually isn’t a problem, but in a crowded city it can be tough to make it around the block without fighting through a throng of people, which can make the effort almost seem not worth it.
Another option is to look for a local rec center, park, or walking trail. Even in busy areas there are usually nature parks or safe walking options just for that reason. You can usually find these types of places online with a quick search or if that’s proving less than fruitful, try asking around at a local fitness place like a gym or workout area. They might be able to point you in the right direction or may know someone who can. The important part is finding a place to safely walk where you can meet your fitness goals without a lot of extra effort, which can be frustrating if you have to drive somewhere just to go walking.
Last but not least is finding a way to effectively utilize your own limited space to get in some walking, which can be tough but doable if you have no other options available. Even if you don’t have a lot of space in an apartment, try to find a good route around the outside edge of your available space and decide how many times you’ll need to walk it to meet your fitness goals. From there just put on a pair of headphones and get to it, you’ll have reached the end of your indoor walk before you know it! As a bonus, you can simply put on a playlist of your favorite songs and finish up when you reach the end.
Though it tends to help, you don’t need a ton of readily available space to get your walking done. All you really need is the drive to actually get your walking time in and you’re sure to find a way to make it work.
